Shannon Hazell - M Branz Team Member 2018 NZRCA On Road Nationals Report

Here we go our first event report from one of the Team Members for 2018,

 

First up is Shannon Hazell, read his report below,

We look forward to more of his reports over the coming season, along with the other team drivers as they complete events.

 

 

Hi All,

I’ve been racing Onroad EP RC since 2014 mostly only doing club meets at NHRCCC ( North Harbour Radio Control Car Club ).
I haven’t got the same amount of laps under my belt as others but continue to learn and enjoy my racing.

At the end of the 2017 indoor season I managed to walk away with the NHRCCC Club Championship for the M-Chassis class having enjoyed some great battles and banter throughout the year.

2018 brings a change in direction and a change of clubs having moved from Hillsborough to Waiau Pa.

For the 2018 season I will be racing 1/10 EP Offroad ( 17.5 2wd Buggy and 17.5 4wd Buggy ) for the first time ever at the Counties Club in Pukekohe and 1/10 Outdoor Onroad ( M-Chassis and F1 ) for the first time at Hamilton.

I would like to thank Darryl at Mbranz Ltd for providing the opportunity to be a brand ambassador for the 2018 season.


Race Report – 2018 NZRCA EP Onroad Nationals – Hastings 8th-11th February 2018.

8th Feb
Arrived in not so Sunny Hawkes Bay and went straight to the track keen to cut some laps with the F1 and M-Chassis (Mini), I had attended the Norths at Hastings back in 2016 so was fairly confident that I had a good base set up for F1 and the car didn’t disappoint I was managing to do high 18 sec laps after a few batts so turned my attention to the Mini which I hadn’t run here before which was on loan to me from current NZ1 Simon Baker.

With the Mini I was hitting flat 24’s to low 24 sec laps – good enough to seed number 1 for qualifying.
9th Feb = Rain and not much practice
10th Feb = More Rain , so no qualifying
11th Feb – Finals Day
Due to the poor weather it was decided that there would only be 1 qualifier and 2 finals if the weather held.
This is the point where it didn’t go so well for me 
F1 Qualifier – Due to an unpredictable diff issue I crashed and burned on lap 2 and collected my car that was now in pieces.
M-Chassis Qualifier – Qualified 5th overall as I just didn’t have the same speed down the straights as others had with their hand out motors but was happy to be sitting mid pack nonetheless.
M-Chassis Finals: 1st final I had managed to work my way into 2nd place with Darryl way out in front but I could see that 3rd and 4th were gaining fast and I literally got blitzed down the back straight by both competitors. I managed to make ground through the infield corners but it wasn’t enough to pull them in. 2nd final I struggled with pace and finished 6th.
Results didn’t go my way but as always I enjoyed my racing and enjoyed the comradery amongst the competitors and the banter with my house mates for the weekend. Sometimes it’s not always about coming first 

Congratulations to all the podium finishers, the conditions were tough and if you didn’t adjust well it was tougher still.
The 13.5 Final was one of the best races I have seen in a long time.
Big thankyou to Phillip Bateman for transporting me around and organising our accommodation. Thank-you also to the Hawkes Bay club for putting on the best event they could with the weather we had.
Another big thankyou to Darryl @ Mbranz Ltd for ensuring I had everything I requested well in time and congratulations on locking down NZ1 in M-Chassis for 2018. The Montech bodies were excellent quality and the Fantom battery I ran in F1 was super punchy. TRG TZ Concept foam F1 tires are still the go to for most tracks in NZ in dry conditions
